Château des Stuart

An Echo of Legacy in the Heart of Burgundy.

Tucked away in the rolling hills of northern Burgundy, the remains of the Château des Stuart in Vézinnes tells a story that weaves through centuries of heritage, nobility, and quiet resilience.

Dating back to the 17th century, the château owes its name to its unexpected royal connection the Stuart lineage. Though far from the windswept Highlands of Scotland, this tranquil estate became a sanctuary for a branch of the Stuart family following their exile from Britain. Local legend suggests that the south pavilion, with its commanding views and elegant symmetry, once hosted gatherings of Jacobite sympathisers and became a symbol of quiet defiance and noble retreat.

Over the years, the château changed hands and purposes. Serving as a noble residence, a farm estate, and even a wartime refuge. Yet, through every chapter, its architectural grace and cultural importance endured. Both the notable pink North Pavilion and the South Pavilion are today separately privately owned. both remain a dedicated focal point of the village.
Not only for its beauty but also for its role in the château’s deeper narrative a quiet witness to the passing of time and the persistence of legacy.

Today, Château des Stuart South Pavilion is awakening once more. It stands as a living monument to the past, with its stone walls holding centuries of stories and its gardens welcoming a new era of creativity, connection, and charm in the region of Yonne.
